8 and 9-year-olds eligible to use UK eGates from 08 July 2026
From 08 July 2026, the UK Government has officially expanded eligibility for eGates (electronic passport gates), allowing eligible children aged 8 and 9 to complete immigration clearance more quickly when arriving in the United Kingdom.
Under the new policy, children aged 8 and 9 can use eGates if they meet all of the following requirements:
- They are at least 120 cm tall.
- They are travelling with an adult who is eligible to use eGates.
- They hold a biometric passport.
Previously, only children aged 10 and above were permitted to use the automated border control system. The UK Home Office estimates that this change will enable around 1.5 million children each year to avoid manual passport control queues, making travel significantly smoother for families, particularly during the busy summer holiday season when passenger numbers are at their highest.
The new policy applies to more than 290 eGates across the United Kingdom, as well as UK border control locations in Europe.
Alex Norris, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, said the change will make journeys easier and faster for families travelling with young children, while giving visitors more time to enjoy their holidays in the UK.
Travellers should note that this update only affects the passport control process. The UK’s entry requirements, visa regulations, and other immigration rules remain unchanged and must still be fully met before travelling.
